Background information

Roulette is simple, easy to play and exciting, with a wide variety of bets and combination of bets, some at long odds and some at even odds. The Roulette Wheel has 36 numbers from 1 to 36, plus a “0” and a “00”. The numbers are alternately colored red and black with the “0” and the “00” green.

There are two types of roulette wheels: the American double-zero wheel and the European single-zero wheel. The casino has an edge of 5.26 percent on the double zero wheel and an edge of 2.70 on the single-zero wheel.

The players will be given a certain amount of time to place as few or as many bets as they desire. The dealer will then spin the ball. At a certain moment the dealer will announce: “No more bets” at which time no more bets may be placed. As the ball finishes its spin and descends into the pockets, the dealer will announce the winning number and its color. He will put a special marker on the winning number. The dealer will collect all the losing bets and then pay off all the winning bets. The dealer will then remove the marker and the procedure begins all over again.

American Wheel
This wheel has 38 partitions that are numbered from the 00, 0 to 36. With having 2 zero’s the house has an advantage of 5.26%. This means that for every £10 bet the house is assured of making 52 pence profit. It doesn’t sound much, but it certainly adds up.

European Wheel
This wheel has 37 partitions that are numbered from the 0 to 36. With having only 1 zero the house has an advantage of 2.70%. This means that for every £10 bet the house is assured of making 27 pence profit. This is the best wheel to play as the house advantage is much less and that makes it easier for you to win.

Basic Rules

Here are some basic rules to abide by when playing Roulette and the best advice I can give you is to learn them and just do them! Statistically they should produce a winning outcome.

The Straight Up Bet
You bet one or more numbers by placing your wager directly on the number or numbers you wish to wager. Winning numbers are paid off at 35 to one..

Straight bet or single-number bet – This occurs when the player places a bet squarely on one number. The bet must be centered on the number and not touch any of the lines enclosing the number. If the number chosen by the player is landed on the player will receive 35 to 1 odds for this win. The odds are derived from the numbers on the table, 36. The 0 and 00 are not included in the odds payout and give the house an advantage. To better understand let’s say you wagered £1 on red 7. If red 7 is landed on you would receive your £1 wager back plus £35 dollars for a total of £36. The symbols 0 and 00 – These can be played the same as any straight bet.

Split Bet
Your wager is placed on a line between two numbers. If either number comes up, you are paid at 17 to one. A split can also be made between 0 and 00 on the American wheel by placing a wager between them.

Split bet or two-number bet – This bet type occurs when the player places a bet on the line between two numbers. If the winning number is one of the two numbers the chip is touching the player wins. The player receives a payout of 17 to 1 here. So for a £1 wager the player receives £17 in addition to his £1 bet on the table.

Three Number Bet
A single bet on any one of three numbers. Place your wager on the outside border of the three numbers you wish to bet on. Winning numbers are paid off at 11 to one.

Street bet or three-number bet – A wager placed on the outside line of a layout indicates that the player wants to play the three numbers going across the layout. The payout odds for a winning bet are 11 to 1.

Four Number Bet.
This wager can only be made on numbers that form a square. You place your bet at the intersection where all four numbers meet.

Square, quarter, corner or four-number bet – When a bet is placed on the intersection between 4 numbers. A win pays 8 to 1 here.

Five Number Bet
This bet only appears on the double-zero layout. It is a single bet that one of the top five numbers (0,00, 1, 2, or 3) will win on the next spin. You make this bet by placing your chips where the line between the 0 and the 3 meets the border of the layout. The bet pays off at six to one. The casino has a higher edge on this bet of approximately eight percent.

Line or five-number bet – When the player places a wager on the line separating the 0, 00 and the 1, 2, 3 numbers. This is only available on American tables and pays 6 to 1.

Six Number Bet
Place this wager on the outside borders of the numbers on the line that separates the two sets of numbers. You are betting that one of those six numbers will hit on the next spin of the ball. This bet pays off at five to one.

Line or six-number bet – Similar to a ‘Street bet’ only the chip is placed between the intersection of two rows on the outside line. This is like two ‘Street bets’ at one time. A winner will receive 5 to 1 on this wager.

The Column Bet
This is a single bet that one of the columns of numbers on the layout will contain the number that hits. You place this bet at the bottom of the column in the area that says two to one. This wager pays off at two to one.

Column or 12-number bet – A bet placed on one of the spaces at the very end of each column pays 2 to 1. This type of wager indicates the player wants to play all 12 numbers contained within that column at once.

The Dozens Bet
Here you are wagering that the winning number will be within a dozen consecutive numbers on the layout. You place this wager in the areas labeled either First Dozen, Second Dozen, or Third Dozen. If any one number in your dozens bet hits, you are paid off at two to one.

Dozens or 12-number bet – There are three spaces located at the bottom of the table indicating ‘1st Dozen’ or the numbers 1 thru 12, ‘2nd Dozen’ or the numbers 13 thru 24 and ‘3rd Dozen’ or the numbers 25 thru 36. A bet placed on one of these spaces will receive 2 to 1 for a win.

The Odds Or Evens Bet
This bet is placed on the section of the layout labeled Odd or Even. The bet pays off at even money.

Odd or Even-number bets – A 1 to 1 payout as well. By placing your chip’s) on these areas you’re wagering that either the next number landed on will be even or odd.

The High Or Low Bet
Place this wager in the boxes marked either 1-18 or 19 to 36. It is a wager as to whether the high numbers or the low numbers will contain the winning hit. The bet is paid off at even money.

Low or high-number bet – Two spaces on the table indicate ‘1-18′ and ’19-36’. These are known as ‘low-number’ and ‘high-number’ bets respectively and payout 1 to 1.

The Red Or Black Bet
This bet is placed on the area indicating red or black and is a wager that the winning number will be either a red one or a black one. The paid is paid off at even money.

Color Bet – Located below the numbers on the layout and in the center of the table are two spaces. One is colored red the other black. By placing your wager on or the other you’re betting that this color will be the next one landed on. A win here will get you 1 to 1.
